From SAA to Saturday Night Live!

Savannah Arts Academy Film students recently welcomed home one of their own, SAA Film alumnus Ben Marshall, comedian, writer, actor, and current cast member of Saturday Night Live!

Ben returned to Savannah and took time to give back to his alma mater, visiting with Film students and his former teacher, Mr. Beringson. Since graduating from Savannah Arts, Ben has built an impressive career in comedy and entertainment, including his work with Please Don’t Destroy, creating and performing in memorable SNL sketches, and working alongside stars including Kevin Hart, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Jenna Ortega, Taylor Swift, Will Ferrell, and many others.

But more than sharing highlights from his career, Ben gave students something even more valuable: real advice about what it takes to succeed in the arts.

He spoke about the importance of dedication, hard work, and putting in the time to develop your craft. He told students about his time at Savannah Arts and encouraged students not to simply wait for an opportunity to present itself, but to seek out and create their own opportunities, to take initiative, make things, collaborate, audition, and put themselves out there.

One of his best pieces of advice? Don't be afraid to be 'cringe'. Taking creative risks, trying something that might not work, and putting yourself out there can feel uncomfortable or even embarrassing. But being willing to take those chances is often how you discover your voice and grow as an artist. 

And Ben didn't come back alone! Joining him was longtime friend and fellow SAA graduate Parth Patel, making the visit an even more special homecoming. 

There is something pretty incredible about today's SAA Film students hearing this advice from someone who once sat in those same classrooms, learned from the same teachers, and began developing his craft right here at Savannah Arts!
