Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment / College Credit Now
SAA students may be eligible to participate in dual enrollment at a local college or university. Due to the scheduling difficulties that arise as well as other considerations, we recommend that students give careful consideration before electing to participate in dual enrollment.
Dual Agreement Policy, Rules, & Procedures
- You must submit a signed copy of this notice (including parent/guardian signature) to your counselor.
- This program works best for students who have a very strong reason to participate, such as exhausting the AP curriculum offered at SAA.
- Many students ask whether colleges will be more impressed if they participate in dual enrollment instead of taking AP classes at SAA. The answer, of course, depends on the college, but dual enrollment is generally not considered superior to AP courses.
- Students who wish to participate in the program must apply for admission to the college of their choice. Information about local options is available at saacounseling.weebly.com. Apply ASAP even if you don’t have qualifying test scores yet. Ask your counselor to submit your transcript. The college will make the admission decision when they receive test scores, a transcript, and a completed application. Test scores and transcripts may take 2-3 weeks to process.
- Interested students should take the SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer by March/April, but could register for the May SAT administration (making sure to request at the time of registration that scores be sent to the college you plan to attend). PSAT scores are temporarily also being accepted at Georgia Southern and Savannah State and can be sent by your counselor. Check the college’s website for minimum scores. Students are responsible for having official scores sent directly through College Board or ACT if using SAT or ACT for admission. To take the Accuplacer, contact the testing office at the college you want to attend for dual enrollment.
- Dual enrollment admission requirements change periodically. Check the website for the college you plan to attend for the most recent requirements.
- Upon being accepted by the college or university, students must arrange to schedule courses as soon as possible. Students must see their counselor before meeting with the college advisor to schedule classes. Because of the complexities of scheduling, participating in dual enrollment dramatically increases the chances that one or more courses that a student would like will be unavailable. Consider this in advance.
- The dual enrollment program typically pays tuition for qualified students to take academic courses. Arts and other courses are not funded through dual enrollment. A directory of approved courses is available on the Ga Futures website (gafutures.org)
- You must speak with your counselor before dropping a dual enrollment class after the drop/add period. Dropping a class and not replacing it with something comparable will result in a grade of 69 on your SAA transcript. Students who withdraw from two dual enrollment classes will no longer be allowed by the state to continue to be eligible for dual enrollment funding.
- College schedules are not designed to be easily compatible with ours. You might not have a choice about whether to take your classes in the morning or afternoon. However, two scheduling scenarios seem to work best for our students. One scenario is to take four classes at SAA (be on our campus half the day) and two classes at college per semester. The second is to take six classes at SAA (be on our campus for ¾ of the day) and one class at college per semester.
- Students who participate in after school activities may be affected strongly by participating in dual enrollment.
- Students who participate in dual enrollment may miss important information because their schedules may cause them to miss advisement sessions and/or class meetings. Seniors are responsible for checking in with senior class advisors and should ask other students regularly about anything they may have missed.
- It is impossible to predict which college courses will fit into your schedule for second semester. Dual enrollment students will not be able to change their SAA schedules at the semester break to accommodate their desired college schedules. Students must maintain a full course load for both semesters.
- A college’s academic calendar may not match ours, and school vacations and holidays do not always line up. Typically, students must complete college coursework and attend classes during SAA’s Spring Break.
- Students must fulfill all graduation requirements and are required to take two arts classes at SAA.
- Postsecondary semester hour credit shall be converted to high school unit credit as follows: 1 to 2 semester hours = .5 unit; 3 to 5 semester hours = 1 unit.
- The state will pay for a maximum of 30 credits total per dual enrollment student.
- Students must apply for dual enrollment funding through www.gafutures.org. This must be completed prior to August 1st. Students who do not complete this procedure by August 1st may experience a delay in funding and may initially have to pay out of pocket and be reimbursed.
- All grades earned at the post-secondary institution will be averaged with high school grades to determine GPA and honors eligibility and will be converted to the high school grading system. Dual enrollment course grades will be converted based upon the advanced course designation (A=100, B=90, C=80, D=70, F=65).
- It is important for the student and parent to understand that college credit hours earned as a dual enrollment student, may not be accepted by certain postsecondary institutions. Each institution has its own specific academic requirements. Courses taken at USG colleges will transfer to other USG institutions.
