Piano 2026 Audition Requirements

Audition Overview

The Piano audition consists of Three Parts. Part 1 is your performance of two pieces, two scales and their corresponding arpeggios. Of your two pieces, one must be memorized. Part 2 is sight reading. Part 3 is a repertoire list submission. Please dress appropriately for your audition.

Part 1: Performance

Part 1 is your performance of two pieces, two scales and their corresponding arpeggios. Of your two pieces, one must be memorized.

Composition One: Composer J.S. Bach: any of the Two-Part Inventions or any of the Bach Sinfonias

Composition Two: A piece of the candidate’s choosing of equal difficulty in a contrasting style and period: Classical, Romantic or Contemporary. This second composition must be at least two pages in length and in a different key from the first composition.

Note: Repertoire may not include pieces from movies, popular music, video games or the like. Do not take repeats.

SCALES: Each candidate must play the scales and arpeggios, for both compositions. Scales are to be played hands together, parallel motion, four octaves in eighth notes (quarter note = 96). Compositions in minor should use the harmonic minor scale.

ARPEGGIOS: hands together, parallel motion, four octaves in eighth notes (quarter note = 82).

Part 2: Sight Reading

Candidates will be given a score to play. They will have 2 minutes to look over the score. After 2 minutes, candidates will play the sight reading selection.

Part 3: Written

The written portion consists of bringing a printed repertoire list to your audition. The list must be printed in 12 point font and should include your name and the date at the top, and a list of any method books and/or pieces you have studied. Any method books listed must include the title and level number(s). Any pieces listed must include the composer's first and last names as well as the title. If you have studied a piece that consists of multiple movements, such as a sonata, you must include the movement number. You can include pieces you have performed as well as pieces that you have studied but not performed. This document is to be printed and brought to the audition.

Extra Pointers

Carefully read each part of the audition process above, as the completion of each part will affect your score. Dress appropriately for a performance audition. If you have questions, consult your private teachers or call SAA for clarification.
