Theatre
Theatre 2026 Audition Requirements
Audition Overview
Thank you for your interest in attending Savannah Arts Academy (SAA) as a Theatre Major. This information will help you prepare for the audition process. Please read carefully. Questions should be directed to David Poole, Theatre Department Chair, at David.Poole@sccpss.com.
Part 1: Performance
Students must prepare and perform two contrasting monologues, each lasting 45 seconds (total time: 90 seconds). One monologue should be from a Shakespeare play (Recommended: ESU Shakespeare Competition Packet: https://www.esuus.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/2026-ESU-NSC-Monologue-Packet.pdf). The second monologue should be a contemporary piece from a published stage play. No other material is permitted. Students will introduce their material, including their name, the playwrights’ names, and the full titles of both plays before performing. After the performance, students should be prepared to answer questions about the plays and cuttings.
Part 2: Redirect
A redirect will be given by one of the judges. Students are expected to apply the new information to their performance. This may involve a second full, partial, or targeted performance. A redirect is a suggestion to perform the piece with an alternative focus, which may include changes in movement or interpretation. Students should demonstrate understanding, flexibility, and willingness to perform with direction.
Part 3: Written
Students may bring a resume to the audition (optional). If provided, only one copy is necessary.
Extra Pointers
- Carefully read each part of the audition process above, as the completion of each part will affect your score.
- Dress appropriately for a performance audition.
- Memorize both monologues and practice introducing your material.

Visual Arts Virtual Audition Requirements
The Visual Arts virtual audition has two main components, which include the art portfolio and the drawing evaluation. A scoring rubric for the audition process is attached.
Each candidate will upload a digital portfolio that demonstrates a good understanding of the elements of art and principles of design. The student will also be asked to complete a live, observational drawing on the day of the auditions.
PART ONE - Art Portfolio
The art portfolio is a collection of digital images of the student’s original artworks showcasing the artist’s diverse range of skill and ability using a variety of techniques, media, subject matter, themes, sizes, formats, and conceptual ideas.
The art portfolio for the audition must be submitted in a PowerPoint presentation format, following the template provided: Click here to view a sample portfolio (off-site).
The art portfolio must contain a total and maximum of nine artwork images, including three pieces from each of the following categories:

These works may include the human portrait, still-life objects, landscapes, and animals using a variety of media such as pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel, paint, etc.
Two-dimensional designs: artworks created with an emphasis on one or more of the elements of design. Designs may be done in black and white or in color and include illustration, graphic design, or imaginative work using a variety of media such as ink, colored pencil, marker, paint, etc.
Additional works: one or more of the following media to include photography, observation drawings, two-dimensional designs, three-dimensional designs, student created digital art (AI generated art is not acceptable), or mixed media.
Please avoid notebook paper for drawing and painting submissions.
Artworks copied from published photographs or other artists’ works, including Anime, Manga, cartoons, or images of celebrities should not be submitted. All work should be from the artist’s own hands and not plagiarized in any way. Additionally, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) generated artwork will not be accepted.
Please note, a screenshot of your working layers must accompany any digital art submitted for consideration in the portfolio. If a screenshot is not submitted, the digital art piece will not be graded along with the rest of the portfolio. Please see the example in the sample portfolio linked above.
